Dean Church

History, Social Sciences, Philosophy

Dean has made his living as a writer, a marketing executive for Fortune 500 corporations, and as a business owner of a management consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing services. Dean also established and served as the Executive Director of the non-profit San Francisco Sports Council. For many years Dean served as the Promotion Director for the San Francisco Chronicle. Dean has a B.A. in Communications from the University of Washington, Seattle. He is married, has three children and lives in Mill Valley. He enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, and playing basketball. This is Dean’s sixth year at Woodside.

Justin Htut

Computer Science and Geometry

Justin recieved his bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and currently attending San Francisco State University for master’s degree in Computer Science. He fell in love with teaching during his undergrad years and continued to teach since then. Outside of teaching, he works as a Software Engineer and he joins Woodside International as a Computer Science instructor.

James Kirkpatrick

College Counselor / English and ESL Instructor

James grew up in Ventura, California. He received his bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in Native American Studies and his JD from the UCLA School of Law. He worked in the field of Federal Indian Law and Policy with an emphasis on cultural resource and sacred site protection before deciding in 2010 to fulfill a dream to live abroad by moving to Beijing, China. There James taught various AP subjects at an international high school and worked as an International IELTS examiner for the British Council. He quickly fell in love with the profession. After returning to the US, James has continued to both teach and practice legal work. He joins Woodside International as an English and ESL instructor and will provide college counselling services.

Michael Masoud


Mr. Masoud graduated from UC Berkeley College of Engineering with a degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation Engineering. He is interested in Robotics and Mechatronics as part of Mechanical Engineering as well as becoming a full-stack engineer and app developer after graduating from UC Berkeley. Currently enrolling in self-study classes in Arduino, logic gates, Matlab and SolidWorks while taking summer classes in Python programming. He has very strong math and physics skills from teaching for over 3 years in Diablo Valley College and other prestigious franchises and academies. Mr. Masoud also has been teaching Math and Physics at C2 Education since 2017. He joins Woodside International School as a Physics teacher in 2020.

Robin Michel

English / Yearbook

Robin Michel joined Woodside International School in the 2019-2020 academic year. She has found the students remarkably resilient and creative in adjusting to the challenges 2020 has brought. She looks forward to getting to know new students this year, and deepening her relationships with every student through the exploration of literature and the human condition. Robin earned her B.A. from St. Mary’s, and has an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Mill’s College. She has worked in school districts in a variety of roles, including teacher, program coordinator, and communications administrator. The founder of Raven & Wren Press, Robin has over twenty years’ experience as a writer, editor, publisher, and creative writing instructor. She and her husband live in San Francisco, where they enjoy picking raspberries in their garden, where she often reads him poetry while he feeds the worm compost.

George Pan

Mandarin Language and Culture

George received degrees in Chinese Language and Literature at Nanjing University and Georgetown University. He has taught Mandarin at Beijing Second Foreign Language University and was appointed Deputy Director of the United Nations-funded English Training Center in Beijing. He was also the Deputy Chief of the Education Department of the National Tourism Administration of China, and President of the Chinese and Foreign Products Journal. George has been teaching at Woodside for 12 years and is also the International Student Liaison for Chinese students and families.

David Powell


David has a B.A. in Applied Mathematics and an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (Applied Statistics), both from the University of California at Berkeley. David specializes in both teaching and applying Mathematics and Statistics and he teaches all levels of Math from pre-Algebra and Algebra to pre-calculus and Calculus at Woodside International. David’s other interests include travel, food, many forms of music and teaching Artificial Intelligence.

Vidya Ramakrishnan


Vidya has vast experience in teaching and her favorite classes are AP English and History. In her English classes, she routinely guides students and helps them enrich their understanding of texts of varied types. Vidya believes that student writing and its development is central to AP English and she is a strong advocate of precision in the craft of writing. For AP Literature students, she seeks to instil a deep appreciation of several genres, their structures and conventions. Timeless themes, exquisite phrasing, and vivid characters are some of the favorite features that students investigate through interdisciplinary approaches. History is another favorite area of exploration and she seeks to blend various perspectives on time periods and themes in order to inquire into our understanding of the past while critically thinking through the scope and limits of such understanding. Vidya also has deep experience in college counselling and finds the energy and heightened focus on career goals amongst high school students truly exciting. She finds helping students make life-changing decisions through college and program selections very rewarding. In her spare time, Vidya likes to travel with her family and pursue music.

Nan Robarge

Visual Arts, Art History

Nan Robarge has an MFA from San Francisco State and has taught art to a range of ages and interests in the City for more than a decade. Part of her art practice includes collaborating with a diverse population that includes kids who have learning differences, elders without a shared spoken language and adults living in a single room occupancy hotel in recovery. In her own studio work, she particularly enjoys working with watercolors, photography, textile techniques and book arts. Flexibility, problem-solving, curiosity and an open mind are keys to her process and she enjoys being able to share her love of art with others.

Joanne Walsh

Head of School

Joanne Walsh joined Woodside International High School as Head of School in 2019. Raised and educated in the U.K, she received a B.A. (Hons) in English at Loughborough University and Post-Graduate Certificate of Education from Sheffield Hallam University. Joanne has worked in schools in the U.K. and U.S. for over 25 years in a variety of roles including teacher, Head of Middle School and Director of Innovation. As an educator she is passionate about educational equity, the neuroscience of learning and leading teams on the path of continuous school improvement. Joanne lives in Marin County with her husband, two sons and daughter. In her spare time she loves to hike, garden, attend the theater and enjoy all that the Bay Area has to offer.

William Charles Waugh


Mr. Waugh has over 8 years of teaching experience in AP economics. He has taught AP economics in international schools in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and public schools in the US. Mr. Waugh is AP certified and IB trained. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of South Carolina and a Masters in Secondary Education from The College of New Jersey. Mr. Waugh is a former Marine, and has worked in fortune 500 companies. Mr. Waugh can provide not only rigorous training in mastering the AP Micro and Macro curriculum toward the goal of achieving a 5 on the AP exam, but also guided help with online economics homework, lessons and general anxiety reducing understanding of economic principles.


Carol Xie

School Operations Manager

Carol immigrated to the U.S. in 2006 and started as a non-credit city college student in 2007. At the City College of San Francisco, she developed a passion for education. Carol received her Master’s degree from San Francisco State University with a focus on Applied Linguistics and Curriculum Design in 2014. Prior to joining Woodside, Carol worked in both public and private education institutions for many years in San Francisco. Carol plans to use her professional background in education and her dynamic inter-cultural experience as the Operations Manager at Woodside International School. Carol will manage and bridge the educational and cultural gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world. Her goal is to transform Woodside International School into an internationally recognized and well-regarded educational institution.
